Northwest Wisconsin Region

Almost 100 people gathered in Cable, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 19th, 2005 at the Telemark Lodge for the first assembly of the People’s Legislature northwest regional event. In addition to endorsing the four original resolutions adopted at the first People’s Legislature event in Madison on January 4th, the group of diverse and reform-minded citizens in attendance created and ratified the following resolutions:

Resolution #1:

Be it resolved:

We support Douglas, Sawyer, Washburn, Rusk, and Marathon county as well
as Lac Courte Oreilles tribal opposition to the proposed Arrowhead-
Weston transmission line.

To prevent future such scenarios, we call for:
a. the reinstatement of the Office of the Public Intervenor,
b. an elected and more independent Public Service Commission and
Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources.
Furthermore we call for :
a. dissolution of the American Transmission Company,
b. denial of any attempts to exercise the power of eminent domain by
private companies
c. development of energy systems based on the concept of distributed
generation.

Resolution #2:

Whereas:

The high cost of health care poses undue burden on the citizens of
Wisconsin,

Be it resolved that:

We support a state-run, single-payer health insurance plan.

Resolution #3:

Whereas:

Current military policy causes hardship to the citizens of Wisconsin by
denying them basic government services and draining the commonwealth.

Be it resolved:
a. we support significant reductions in the military budget, and
b. an end to foriegn military interventionism.

Resolution # 4:

Regarding local fiscal control, we support governmental reforms as needed to
implement a meaningful homestead credit for Wisconsin residents'
principal residence, one providing significant tax relief to enable low
income, primarily elderly residents to remain in their homes, even as
local assessed values spiral upward.
